(Kimberly A. Bautista)

Public Safety Commissioner Robert Guerrero was officially sworn in Tuesday to serve his second term at the helm of the islands’ police force.

Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph Camacho officiated Guerrero’s swearing in and reminded everyone present that the oath of office is taken by all who serve the CNMI to pledge their loyalty to the people of the Commonwealth.

“The oath of office is imbedded into the CNMI constitution and there’s a special reason why that is. No governor, no senator, no congressman, no mayor, no judge, not even a commissioner can change the Constitution; only the people of the Commonwealth can change the Constitution. So, when you take this oath of office, you bind yourself, you commit your…loyalty [to] the Commonwealth and the people of the Commonwealth. If you’re ever in doubt where your loyalty should be, first and foremost, it should be with the people of the Commonwealth,” he said.

Following the oath-taking, Guerrero said that he appreciates the amount of trust that was placed in his leadership and looks forward to the challenges of the next four years.

Guerrero added that he looks forward to further improvements at the department in his next term.

“Of course, we still have a lot of work to do for the department to work even more efficiently because there’s always room for improvement. We want to continue what works. We’ve been working on our physical fitness for our officers, our service training, [and] we have the academy coming up,” he said.

Guerrero was reappointed DPS commissioner last week by the CNMI Senate’s Executive Appointments and Government Investigation Committee.

The bulk of the Department of Public Safety force came out Tuesday to support reappointed DPS Commissioner Robert Guerrero as he took his oath of office.
