{"id":298168,"date":"2019-04-24T06:06:31","date_gmt":"2019-04-23T20:06:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=298168"},"modified":"2019-04-24T06:06:31","modified_gmt":"2019-04-23T20:06:31","slug":"federal-prosecutor-opposes-reducing-sentence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/federal-prosecutor-opposes-reducing-sentence\/","title":{"rendered":"Federal prosecutor opposes reducing sentence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. government opposes reducing the sentence to be imposed on a man who confessed that their group \u201ccooked\u201d meth using the so-called shake-and-bake method.<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S. government\u2019s sentencing recommendation, assistant U.S. attorney Garth Backe insists that Sidney Capelle Kani is not entitled to a reduced sentence, having expressly admitted to acting as a middleman for drug deals.<\/p>\n<p>Citing Kani\u2019s plea agreement, Backe said that Kani admitted that he obtained many items over a two-month span \u201cto use to make meth\u201d which he, along with his conspirators, \u201cwould smoke, as well as sell and\/or give to other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kani will be sentenced on April 29 at 1:30pm.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2018, Kani pleaded guilty to conspiracy to manufacture and distribute methamphetamine, and manufacture and distribution of methamphetamine on premises where a child is present and resides. <\/p>\n<p>The charges carry a total maximum penalty of not more than 40 years and a fine not to exceed $1.2 million.<\/p>\n<p>In his admissions, Kani said that, between July 1, 2017, and Feb. 25, 2018, his co-defendants\u2014Vincent David Cabrera Jr., Eugene Blas Repeki Jr., and Rick Urumelog Omar Jr.\u2014along with others, agreed to manufacture and distribute meth.<\/p>\n<p>Kani said that, beginning on at least Jan. 1, 2018, he knew of the group\u2019s agreement to make and distribute meth and that he joined in the agreement.<br \/>\nThe remaining defendants also pleaded guilty. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. government opposes reducing the sentence to be imposed on a man who confessed&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-298168","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/298168","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=298168"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/298168\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=298168"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=298168"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=298168"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
