{"id":298509,"date":"2019-04-30T06:06:46","date_gmt":"2019-04-29T20:06:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=298509"},"modified":"2019-04-30T06:06:46","modified_gmt":"2019-04-29T20:06:46","slug":"ice-maker-gets-7-years-3-months-in-prison-sentence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/ice-maker-gets-7-years-3-months-in-prison-sentence\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Ice\u2019 maker gets 7 years, 3 months in prison sentence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The federal court sentenced a man to seven years and three months in prison yesterday after he pleaded guilty to conspiring with other to make the drug methamphetamine using the so-called shake-and- bake method.<\/p>\n<p>Sidney Capelle Kani was sentenced to 40 months for conspiracy to manufacture and distribute methamphetamine, plus 47 months for the manufacture and distribution of methamphetamine on premises where a child is present and resides.<\/p>\n<p>This means a total sentence of 87 months in prison\u2014or seven years and three months.<\/p>\n<p>He was given credit for time already served in prison since his arrest last year.<\/p>\n<p>As part of his sentence, he will be made to undergo drug rehabilitation, an educational program, anger management, and alcohol abuse counseling while in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Upon release, he will be on supervised release for three years.<\/p>\n<p>As a further condition of his supervised release, Kani must participate in a substance abuse treatment program, refrain from the use of any alcoholic beverages, and perform 100 hours of community service. He was ordered to pay $100 in special assessment fee.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona granted the U.S. government\u2019s motion to drop the remaining two charges against Kani.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant U.S. attorney Garth Backe had recommended a sentence of 78 months in prison. Colin Thompson, the court-appointed counsel for Kani, recommended imprisonment of 70 months.<\/p>\n<p>Kani pleaded guilty in May 2018.<\/p>\n<p>In his sentencing recommendation, Backe said that Kani admitted that, over a two-month span, he obtained numerous items \u201cto use to make meth\u201d which he, along with the other conspirators, \u201cwould smoke, as well as sell and\/or give to other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Backe said that Kani admitted to acting as a middleman for a drug deal on Feb. 1, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>In his admissions, Kani said that, between July 1, 2017, and Feb. 25, 2018, his co-defendants\u2014Vincent David Cabrera Jr., Eugene Blas Repeki Jr., and Rick Urumelog Omar Jr.\u2014along with others, agreed to manufacture and distribute meth.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning at least Jan. 1, 2018, Kani knew of the group\u2019s agreement to make and distribute meth and that he joined in the agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining defendants also pleaded guilty.<\/p>\n<p>Last March 15, Manglona sentenced Cabrera and co-defendant Eugene Blas Repeki Jr. to 15 years imprisonment each.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The federal court sentenced a man to seven years and three months in prison yesterday&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-298509","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/298509","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=298509"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/298509\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=298509"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=298509"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=298509"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
