{"id":298534,"date":"2019-04-30T06:06:59","date_gmt":"2019-04-29T20:06:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=298534"},"modified":"2019-04-30T06:06:59","modified_gmt":"2019-04-29T20:06:59","slug":"chcc-now-owes-cuc-27-7m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/chcc-now-owes-cuc-27-7m\/","title":{"rendered":"CHCC now owes CUC $27.7M"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Commonwealth Health Care Corp.\u2019s monthly utility bill totals $400,000, but it can only afford to pay the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. just $71,000 a month, resulting in a debt that has now ballooned to $27.7 million. <\/p>\n<p>At a CUC board meeting last week, CUC executive director Gary P. Camacho disclosed that, according to CHCC, it can only afford to pay CUC $71,000 a month at this time because of other obligations they must meet. <\/p>\n<p>Yet even that is apparently a problem. Camacho said it is his understanding that CHCC has not made payment, \u201cnot even the $71,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s challenging and the discussion was made. It is imperative that we recover our costs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Citing internal CHCC computations, Camacho said that CHCC\u2019s $71,000 is \u201call they have left in the pot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u201cBut their usage is easily over $400,000 a month,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>He said CUC is diligent about disconnecting residential and commercial customers and that CUC has worked out different arrangements with other agencies that also have outstanding debts.<\/p>\n<p>He underscored the need to be creative to work something out to collect the receivables but CHCC \u201ccan only be creative up to $71,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u201cSo again, everybody is going to have to pay that bill at some point. Believe me it\u2019s [going to] be an issue in our audit.
