{"id":299354,"date":"2019-05-14T06:00:29","date_gmt":"2019-05-13T20:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=299354"},"modified":"2019-05-14T06:00:29","modified_gmt":"2019-05-13T20:00:29","slug":"bachelor-degree-in-criminal-justice-would-improve-policing-in-the-cnmi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/bachelor-degree-in-criminal-justice-would-improve-policing-in-the-cnmi\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Bachelor degree in criminal justice would improve policing in the CNMI\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Public Safety is confident that the new bachelor\u2019s degree in criminal justice program at the Northern Marianas College would help improve law enforcement in the CNMI. <\/p>\n<p>DPS Commissioner Robert Guerrero believes it would benefit the islands\u2019 police force.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike any other career, when you start off with a two-year program and extend it to a four-year program, of course you get more out of the education system and that would [improve] our officers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>One of the improvements Guerrero expects to see in CNMI police officers who undergo the program is in report writing. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs with any crime, it\u2019s always the report of a police officer that makes or breaks a case, so the criminal justice program that our police officers will go through will improve their report writing and this will give them more course to avail of and make their law enforcement career a more\u2026competitive [one],\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>The new bachelor\u2019s degree program in criminal justice was established through a memorandum of agreement signed between NMC and the University of Guam last Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>At one point, an increase in the salary of officers with a bachelor\u2019s degree was mentioned but Guerrero said that\u2019s not certain. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure about the pay because that\u2019s regulated by the Civil Service Commission,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>Guerrero said he would still encourage his officers to take the program to elevate their education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been pushing our officers to take more courses. \u2026With this program here, they can avail of them here at NMC so this is a plus for them.
