{"id":299480,"date":"2019-05-15T06:00:31","date_gmt":"2019-05-14T20:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=299480"},"modified":"2019-05-15T06:00:31","modified_gmt":"2019-05-14T20:00:31","slug":"carol-sweeps-opener-in-3rd-italian-tourney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/carol-sweeps-opener-in-3rd-italian-tourney\/","title":{"rendered":"Carol sweeps opener in 3rd Italian tourney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/carol-pix.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The CNMI\u2019s Carol Lee won both her singles and doubles opening matches in the Torneo Internazionale \u201cCitt\u00e0 Di Santa Croce\u201d Mauro Sabatini in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>In the singles play, unranked Lee was pitted against Peru\u2019s Dana Guzman and needed three sets to survive the opener last Sunday at the Tennis Club Santa Croce Via Poggio Adorno in Santa Croce Sull\u2019Arno, Tuscany.<\/p>\n<p>The Commonwealth junior player prevailed in the first set, 6-1, but was clobbered by Guzman in the second, 6-0. Then in the deciding third set, Lee regained her bearings and eked out a 6-4 triumph to advance to the second round against Colombia\u2019s Antonio Samudio. The No. 11 seed drew a bye in the opening round.<\/p>\n<p>In the doubles event, Lee teamed up with Puerto Rico\u2019s Lauren Anzalotta Kynoch and they took only two sets to beat Italy\u2019s Alessandra Anghel and Teresa Scardigli, 6-1, 6-0. With the sweep, Lee and Kynoch arranged a second round match against the pair of Ukraine\u2019s Liubov Kostenko and Russia\u2019s Taisya Pachkaleva, who got a bye in the first round to earn a free trip to the next phase of the competition.<\/p>\n<p>The Torneo Internazionale \u201cCitt\u00e0 Di Santa Croce\u201d Mauro Sabatini is a Grade 1 tournament that awards as much as 280 ITF Juniors World ranking points to the singles champion and 210 to the doubles winners.
