Junior player Carol Lee eased her way to the third round of the singles play of the Torneo Internazionale \u201cCitt\u00e0 Di Santa Croce\u201d Mauro Sabatini after earning an upset win yesterday in Italy.<\/p>\n

The CNMI bet challenged No. 11 seed Antonia Samudio of Colombia and cruised to a straight set victory to march into the Round of 16. Lee hammered Samudio in the first set, 6-0, and completed the sweep with a 6-2 triumph in the second.<\/p>\n

After stunning Samudio, next up for the 17-year-old Lee is Russia\u2019s Diana Shnaider, who also stole the thunder from her seeded opponent to make it to the third round. The Russian edgedNo. 8 Mintegi Del Olmo of Spain in the first set, 7-5, before getting an easier victory in the second, 6-2.<\/p>\n

Lee and Shnaider were two of the six unseeded players to reach the Round of 16 of the tournament that is being played at the Tennis Club Santa Croce Via Poggio Adorno in Santa Croce Sull\u2019Arno, Tuscany. Others on the list were Great Britain\u2019s Amami Banks, Russia\u2019s Polina Kudermetova, Czech Republic\u2019s Linda Koskova, Educador\u2019s Mell Elizabeth Reasco Gonzales, and Chloe Beck of the U.S.<\/p>\n

The No. 1 rank Shoyun Park and No. 2 Helena Pellicano of Malta are still in contention along with their fellow seeded players, No. 16 Melania Delai of Italy, No. 5 Maria Tkacheva and No. 4 Oksama Selekhmeteva of Russia, No. 3 Sada Nahimana of Burundi, No. 5 Mylene Halemai of France, No. 10 Romana Cisovska of Slovakia, and No. 14 Pia Lovric of Slovenia.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Lee also played in the second round of the doubles event of the Grade 1 tournament, but she and Puerto Rico\u2019s Lauren Anzalotta Kynoch were beaten by Ukraine\u2019s Liubov Kostenko and Russia\u2019s Taisya Pachkaleva, 6-2, 6-2.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
