{"id":299629,"date":"2019-05-17T06:00:06","date_gmt":"2019-05-16T20:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=299629"},"modified":"2019-05-17T06:00:06","modified_gmt":"2019-05-16T20:00:06","slug":"iakopo-inks-contract-with-mva","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/iakopo-inks-contract-with-mva\/","title":{"rendered":"Iakopo inks contract with MVA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The new managing director of the Marianas Visitors Authority, Priscilla Maratita Iakopo, has been in office since Monday after signing a one-year contract with the islands\u2019 tourism body.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_299630\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-299630\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Priscilla-Iakopo-mug-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-299630\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-299630\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Iakopo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She said she has a lot of plans for MVA.<\/p>\n<p>Iakopo said she was informed about the vacancy and that she went through the interview process, got a phone call, met with MVA board chair Marian Aldan-Pierce, discussed the position, and then signed a one-year contract.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked them to give me the opportunity,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>As to some concerns that she has no tourism business background, Iakopo said her education and background speaks a lot for her.<\/p>\n<p>Iakopo used to serve as interim chief financial officer at the Commonwealth Health Care Corp. She last served as director of CHCC\u2019s procurement and supply division.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate interview yesterday, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres said he is aware of the criticism that Iakopo is not experienced in the tourism industry. He pointed out, though, that he has previously appointed people who don\u2019t have expertise in specific fields. <\/p>\n<p>In Iakopo\u2019s case, Torres said she has a master\u2019s degree and a college degree. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat holds for something. She\u2019s born and raised here. For me that it also says something,\u201d he pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>Torres said Iakopo went to school in the U.S. mainland and came back as her family is here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that her heart is here. And tourism, it\u2019s everybody\u2019s business,\u201d the governor said.<\/p>\n<p>He said it is about time that the CNMI start giving their own people the opportunity to gain experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a governor I have done that in the past.
