{"id":299820,"date":"2019-05-20T06:06:39","date_gmt":"2019-05-19T20:06:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=299820"},"modified":"2019-05-20T06:06:39","modified_gmt":"2019-05-19T20:06:39","slug":"nmc-holds-first-ever-disability-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/nmc-holds-first-ever-disability-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"NMC holds first-ever disability conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_299821\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-299821\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Disability-conference-pix.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" class=\"size-full wp-image-299821\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-299821\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Over 100 attend the first ever Northern Marianas College transition conference for students with disabilities last Friday.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Instead of the NMI Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, the Northern Marianas College took over hosting duties for its first disabilities conference at the Fiesta Resort &amp; Spa Saipan over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>NMC interim director of the Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Jennifer Castro told Saipan Tribune that the conference was held in order to inform incoming students of the services the college offer to people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur hope is to do it every year. \u2026We are working closely with the OVR to provide this for all three islands,\u201d she said, noting that last Friday\u2019s conference was the first on Saipan hosted by NMC.<\/p>\n<p>She noted that talks with Tinian and Rota about hosting the same conference there are ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to get students with disabilities\u2026started [thinking about the] kind of jobs they want to get into after college,\u201d she said. \u201c[This conference] lets them know that there is support [for them] in college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conference also helps students pick the career they wish to pursue, added NMC director of Community Development Arthur De Or.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students are learning how they can access services after high school.
