The final stretch of this month will be Environmental Awareness Week. <\/p>\n
Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios, in his capacity as acting governor, signed a proclamation last Wednesday on Capital Hill declaring the week of May 27 to 31 as Environmental Awareness Week to promote awareness and provide information about taking care of the environment, especially the natural resources of the CNMI.<\/p>\n
The Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality is the lead agency that organizes this annual event. This year\u2019s theme is \u201cTreasure our Earth, Protect our Resources.\u201d <\/p>\n
The weeklong event calls on everyone to do their part in keeping the islands and its surroundings clean and protected.<\/p>\n
Palacios praised BECQ personnel and everyone that do their share in keeping the environment clean. \u201cI don\u2019t think we need to have a list of all the things that you [BECQ officials and personnel] do for our islands,\u201d he said. \u201cThe resources of the Commonwealth is important. For some, it has become their livelihood and it encompasses the economic lifeline of the CNMI.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added that there are some people who still fail to take their trash home after visiting the beaches. \u201cThat\u2019s why we try our very best to provide the outreach and information to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAgencies like BECQ and [the Department of Lands and Natural Resources]\u2026are some that can paint a bright future for our beautiful islands and for our future generations,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The weeklong festivity will begin with an environmental expo on May 28 and 29 at the American Memorial Park. On Thursday, May 30, the Mariana Islands Nature Alliance will be having a \u201cBringing Back Our Trees\u201d campaign with the location to be announced.
