(Contributed Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Tan Siu Lin Foundation rallied behind the Saipan Fil-Am Lions Club\u2019s Diabetes Awareness Project last May 26, a one-day seminar at the Hibiscus Hall of the Fiesta Resort &amp; Spa Saipan that focused on raising awareness of this debilitating disease.<\/p>\n<p>As an advocate of health and wellness programs, the foundation donated $1,000 for the project.<\/p>\n<p>TSL Foundation executive director Merlie Tolentino said that diabetes and its complication \u201care definitely a cause of concern not only in the CNMI but the rest of the world, and getting valuable information about the disease out to the community could help prevent the loss of limbs and lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saipan Fil-Am Lions Club president Annamae Adaza said more than 100 members and non-members took part in the Diabetes Awareness Project, which had physician assistants Douglas and Elizabeth Metz, Jessie Delos Reyes-Willsey, and Amor Zapata as resource speakers. <\/p>\n<p>They discussed meal planning, eye care, exercise, and contributing factors to the disease. Reading materials on prevention and management were also distributed to the attendees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a very good turnout. [We hope] participants will put into practice what they have learned from our guest speakers.  If they could change their lifestyle, live healthier, and encourage their family members to do the same, then we, Lions, would have accomplished our goal to help lessen the number of people affected by diabetes and other diseases associated with it,\u201d Adaza said.<\/p>\n<p>The Diabetes Awareness Project was made possible by a mini grant from Lions Clubs International and though the support of Fiesta Resort &amp; Spa Saipan, T Galleria, PHI Pharmacy, Brabu Pharmacy &amp; Wellness Center, Happy Market, Hardt Eye Clinic and Diabetes Education Center, and the Commonwealth Health Care Corp.\u2019s Non-Communicable Diseases Bureau. The project, which Saipan Fil-Am Lions Club Service chair Ernie Molina facilitated, was part of the group\u2019s annual health fair.
