The Commonwealth Health Care Corp. has a new oncology service provider as well as new oncology services.<\/p>\n
Dr. Peter Brett joined the CHCC medical staff this month and would be working with Dr. John Tudela, Dr. Joel Smith, and CHCC\u2019s nursing staff to offer a \u201cmuch more comprehensive cancer care\u201d at CHCC.<\/p>\n
According to a CHCC statement last week, Brett provides expert consultation and advice for those diagnosed with cancer and can direct what tests need to be done. He can also decide what treatments for the patient\u2019s cancer would be most appropriate.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost treatments that are medications for most cancers should soon be available at the CHCC such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and molecular targeted treatments,\u201d a CHCC statement noted.<\/p>\n
Brett, according to CHCC, would also help provide close follow-ups for patients with cancer to assess for medical problems that develop, side effects of treatment, and cancer recurrence monitoring, if needed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe CHCC will still not be able to provide some types of specialty cancer surgery, such as major pancreatic surgery, and patients will still need to travel off-island for radiation treatments, but many patients who formerly would have had to travel off-island for their cancer care can now receive this care locally on Saipan,\u201d CHCC noted.<\/p>\n
CHCC further noted that Brett has been a board-certified medical oncologist in California for over 25 years. <\/p>\n
\u201cHe has expertise in evaluating and treating all types of cancer that occur in adults,\u201d CHCC further stated.<\/p>\n
Brett is a graduate of the Stanford Medical School in California and then underwent internal medicine training at Stanford University Hospital. He completed his medical oncology fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland.<\/p>\n
