The Commonwealth Ports Authority has decided to demolish and rebuild a new, larger commuter terminal to serve the islands of Rota and Tinian. <\/p>\n
The new facility will be approximately 19,000 square feet and will include additional counter and airline office spaces, a food and beverage concession space, a larger holding room, larger baggage claim area, and a space for U.S. Customs Border Protection processing. The new terminal will also include updated restrooms, improved seating, and will comply with American with Disabilities Act requirements. <\/p>\n
The decision to build a new facility was due to the condition of the existing commuter, which was heavily damaged by Super Typhoon Yutu. <\/p>\n
Due to concerns with the building\u2019s structural integrity and the substantial cost of typhoon and renovation repairs, it was decided that a larger terminal that both accommodates air carriers\u2019 needs and provides additional space for potential airlines wishing to develop flight operations to Rota, Tinian, and possibly Guam, would be the best option. <\/p>\n
The project will include replacing the covered walkway from the commuter terminal to the international terminal\u2019s bus parking, which was also damaged beyond repair during Super Typhoon Yutu. <\/p>\n
A request for qualifications for architectural\/engineering design services was announced this week. Once the qualification statements are reviewed, evaluated, and ranked, CPA will then commence negotiations with the highest ranked firm to determine the scope of work and fee proposal for the design. Design will commence once negotiations are final and an acceptable scope and fee have been determined.<\/p>\n
