{"id":303090,"date":"2019-07-09T06:06:43","date_gmt":"2019-07-08T20:06:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=303090"},"modified":"2019-07-09T06:06:43","modified_gmt":"2019-07-08T20:06:43","slug":"ridding-foreign-labor-economically-detrimental","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/ridding-foreign-labor-economically-detrimental\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Ridding foreign labor economically detrimental\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>House Speaker Blas Jonathan Attao (R-Saipan) said getting rid of the foreign labor in the CNMI is \u201ceconomically very, very detrimental.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The population is determined on higher economic growth, said Attao when asked for comment yesterday about the U.S. Department of Labor Employment and Training Administration\u2019s Office of Foreign Labor Certification\u2019s approval of the final round of submissions for the CNMI Prevailing Wage Survey.<\/p>\n<p>Attao said sometimes a lot of the decisions are made so many thousands of miles away from the CNMI.<\/p>\n<p>He said the CNMI\u2019s reliance on goods and services are still dependent from outside the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n<p>The speaker said the CNMI does not have the population necessary to fill all the job positions.<\/p>\n<p>He said the CNMI is working on that by looking for ways through the Northern Marianas College, the Public School System, and the Northern Marianas Trades Institute, to get those positions.<\/p>\n<p>Attao, however, stated that the CNMI\u2019s population in reality cannot sustain the needed jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why we are still relying on foreign labor,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Attao said businesses have to abide by the NMI Prevailing Wage Survey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that\u2019s what being called for then we have to abide by,\u201d Attao pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>The speaker noted that with the damage that the CNMI had gone through from all the typhoons, getting contractors is the challenge right now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the prevailing wage then it might be not beneficial to some of the people that are looking for contractors,\u201d he said, adding that contractors might actually put additional amount because the demand is very high and the supply is very low.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>House Speaker Blas Jonathan Attao (R-Saipan) said getting rid of the foreign labor in the&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-303090","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/303090","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/23"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=303090"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/303090\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=303090"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=303090"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=303090"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
