{"id":305270,"date":"2019-08-05T06:06:29","date_gmt":"2019-08-04T20:06:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=305270"},"modified":"2019-08-05T06:06:29","modified_gmt":"2019-08-04T20:06:29","slug":"478m-released-to-232-airports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/478m-released-to-232-airports\/","title":{"rendered":"$478M released to 232 airports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON, D.C.\u2014The U.S. Department of Transportation will award $478 million in airport infrastructure grants to 232 airports in 43 states, including American Samoa, the CNMI, and Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n<p>This is the fourth allotment of the total $3.18 billion in Federal Aviation Administration\u2019s Airport Improvement Program funding for airports across the United States.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInfrastructure projects funded by these grants will advance safety, improve travel, generate jobs and provide other economic benefits for local communities,\u201d said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.<\/p>\n<p>Selected projects include runway reconstruction and rehabilitation, construction of firefighting facilities, and the maintenance of taxiways, aprons, and terminals. The construction and equipment supported by this funding increase the airports\u2019 safety, emergency response capabilities, and capacity, and could support further economic growth and development within each airport\u2019s region.<\/p>\n<p>Airport infrastructure in the United States is composed of 3,332 airports and 5,000 paved runways.\u00a0 According to the FAA\u2019s most recent economic analysis, U.S. civil aviation accounts for $1.6 trillion in total economic activity and supports nearly 11 million jobs. <\/p>\n<p>Airports can receive a certain amount of AIP funding each year based on activity levels and project needs.
