The Saipan Pacific Winds Concert Band\u00a0is hosting a free summer-closing concert on Sunday, Aug. 25, at the Hyatt Regency Saipan ballroom, featuring several guest bands.<\/p>\n
Doors open at 4pm and the show starts at 4:30pm. <\/p>\n
The concert, called \u201cHands Across the Sea,\u201d will feature performances by musicians from Saipan and Guam, as well as the Gamagori Junior Band\u00a0from the Aichi Prefecture in Japan. This is the band\u2019s first visit to Saipan.<\/p>\n
Band directors in Gamagori City in Aichi created the Gamagori Junior Band in 1995, in response to the declining number of band programs and stagnating band activities in the city. Their hope was to improve the level of musicianship of youth members and provide cultural exchange opportunities through music.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Since its creation, the Gamagori Junior Band has performed annual concerts 19 times, all receiving positive responses. Internationally, the band has traveled seven times to China, South Korea, and Guam. The band has held friendship concerts with bands from Australia, Guam, South Korea and Poland. The Gamagori Junior Band has established a sister-city program with Urasoe City in Okinawa.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The opening act of the Hands Across the Sea Concert will be\u00a0Guam National Guard\u2019s 721st Army Rock Band. There will also be performances by the Saipan Pacific Winds Concert Band; a combined band composed of the Guam National Guard\u2019s 721st Army Rock Band, the Gamagori Junior Band, and Saipan Pacific Winds Concert Band; and individual musicians from Marianas High School, Saipan International School, and Saipan Community School.<\/p>\n
Program music will include Shenandoah, selections from Aladdin, The Lion King medley, March Hands Across the Sea, and other selections.<\/p>\n
