Her husband wanted to bury her on Rota. So I went ahead and purchased two round-trip Star Marianas tickets ($520) so that my daughter and I could attend the funeral. I went up to the commuter terminal at the airport in Guam and paid for our tickets explaining that the funeral will be on Saturday and that I have to be back in Guam on Sunday as my daughter needs to be back at school Monday.

Today I went to check-in for our flight to Guam and was told we weren’t on the passenger list. Mind you, I had paid for our car rental, hotel and food during our stay and was short on funds. They contacted Guam and were told I had made the return reservation for the 24th. I told them that’s not true as the funeral was on Saturday and I couldn’t possibly leave in the middle of the funeral service to make it to their 12:30pm flight to Guam. I mean, common sense would tell you that! So because I missed the flight on Saturday, my tickets to Guam were voided and I had to buy two more tickets ($260) if I wanted to get out of Rota.

As angry as I was, I had no choice but to borrow from family. Humiliated, I just wanted to get to Guam. We arrived in Guam but found out my baggage was on Rota and I would have to wait until Monday for them. I had frozen food in a box and it will be spoiled by Monday. On top of all that, they want me to pay $.50 a pound for my baggage!

Mel Sablan
Yigo, Guam

An unfortunate news came to us that my sister had passed away.
