{"id":307472,"date":"2019-09-06T06:00:07","date_gmt":"2019-09-05T20:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=307472"},"modified":"2019-09-06T06:00:07","modified_gmt":"2019-09-05T20:00:07","slug":"miss-marianas-pushes-language-learning-among-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/miss-marianas-pushes-language-learning-among-youth\/","title":{"rendered":"Miss Marianas pushes language learning among youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2019 Miss Marianas Shannon Sasamoto has been tapped by the Office of the Governor\u2019s Youth Affairs Office to advance cultural preservation through language among the CNMI\u2019s youth.<\/p>\n<p>Sasamoto, who admits that she needs to be more fluent in the indigenous languages, said it is of her personal interest to learn her own language. The CNMI\u2019s two indigenous languages are Chamorro and Carolinian.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel that a lot of people my age\u2026can relate with me. I\u2019m someone that does not know my language fluently but I appreciate my culture to the utmost but, of course, it\u2019s a different level when you know your own language,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s never too late to learn our native language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Youth Affairs special assistant Monique Sablan said it would be proper to have Miss Marianas be able to speak the indigenous languages.<\/p>\n<p>The Youth Affairs Office provides avenues for youth to learn about the islands\u2019 culture through its Gualo Rai Youth Learning Center and Chalan Kanoa Manhoben Center.
