(Iva Maurin)

With so many struggling to land a job, the Northern Marianas College sees it as part of its mission to help people find their spot in the workplace.

Polly DLG Masga, NMC’s director of Human Resources, stressed this during the “Dress for Success” event organized by the Women’s Affairs Office last Sept. 6 at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe.

And part of that mission is to empower and let people know what the tools are—what human resources professional look for when someone is for a job, Masga said, adding that it is important to provide people wanting to enter the workforce with tips to succeed.

“Being part of the college, our main mission is to be the vehicle to put people in the workforce,” she said. That included NMC participating in the “Dress for Success” event as a means to help women on the island get a career.

Throughout her 18 years as a human resource professional, Masga has seen job disasters like applications not being completed, résumés not being turned in, and even applicants not presenting themselves well during the interview.

Aside from academic programs, NMC also organizes career fairs and training programs for the community.

“People would ask questions like, ‘How can I identify what my weaknesses are, what my strength is?’ and I coach them. A lot of it is really self-reflection. They have to reflect on who they are as an individual,” Masga said.

NMC career manager Neda C. Deleon Guerrero said they also teach people to explore exercises and tools to help them understand their interests, values, and skills for continuing education and job search.

“We want to empower everybody to believe in themselves—that they really can do what they dream to do. We have a lot of creativity on the island that could open the door for a career,” Deleon Guerrero said.

Aside from outreach programs, NMC also offers Adult Basic Education that focuses on workforce preparation for people preparing to enter the workforce, including career planning and career skills academy.

[4
2635,1537,69,67
post-307987","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-local-news","tag-adult-basic-education","tag-human-resources","tag-nmc","tag-people
["GET
