Once you take a look at the basic items, consider what\u00a0unique needs\u00a0your family might have, such as supplies for\u00a0pets, or\u00a0seniors.<\/p>\n<p>After an emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days. Being prepared means having your own\u00a0food,\u00a0water\u00a0and other\u00a0supplies\u00a0to last for at least 72 hours. A disaster supplies kit is a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BASIC DISASTER SUPPLIES KIT<\/strong><br \/>\nTo assemble your kit, store items in airtight plastic bags and put your entire disaster supplies kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or a duffel bag.<\/p>\n<p>A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Water\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation<br \/>\n\u2022 Food\u00a0&#8211; at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food<br \/>\n\u2022 Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert<br \/>\n\u2022 Flashlight<br \/>\n\u2022 First aid kit<br \/>\n\u2022 Extra batteries<br \/>\n\u2022 Whistle to signal for help<br \/>\n\u2022 Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to\u00a0shelter-in-place<br \/>\n\u2022 Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation<br \/>\n\u2022 Wrench or pliers to\u00a0turn off utilities<br \/>\n\u2022 Manual can opener for food<br \/>\n\u2022 Local maps<br \/>\n\u2022 Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery<br \/>\n\u2022 Download the\u00a0Recommended Supplies List\u00a0(PDF)<\/p>\n<p><strong>ADDITIONAL EMERGENCY SUPPLIES<\/strong><br \/>\nConsider adding the following items to your emergency supply kit based on your individual needs:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Prescription medications<br \/>\n\u2022 Non-prescription medications such as pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medication, antacids or laxatives<br \/>\n\u2022 Glasses and contact lense solution<br \/>\n\u2022 Infant formula, bottles, diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream<br \/>\n\u2022 Pet food and extra water for your pet<br \/>\n\u2022 Cash or traveler\u2019s checks<br \/>\n\u2022 Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records saved electronically or in a waterproof, portable container<br \/>\n\u2022 Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person<br \/>\n\u2022 Complete change of clothing appropriate for your climate and sturdy shoes<br \/>\n\u2022 Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper to disinfect water<br \/>\n\u2022 Fire extinguisher<br \/>\n\u2022 Matches in a waterproof container<br \/>\n\u2022 Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items<br \/>\n\u2022 Mess kits, paper cups, plates, paper towels and plastic utensils<br \/>\n\u2022 Paper and pencil<br \/>\n\u2022 Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children<\/p>\n<p><strong>MAINTAINING YOUR KIT<\/strong><br \/>\nAfter assembling your kit remember to maintain it so it\u2019s ready when needed:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Keep canned\u00a0food\u00a0in a cool, dry place<br \/>\n\u2022 Store boxed food in tightly closed plastic or metal containers<br \/>\n\u2022 Replace expired items as needed<br \/>\n\u2022 Re-think your needs every year and update your kit as your family\u2019s needs change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KIT STORAGE LOCATIONS<\/strong><br \/>\nSince you do not know where you will be when an emergency occurs, prepare supplies for home, work and vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Home: Keep this kit in a designated place and have it ready in case you have to leave your home quickly. Make sure all family members know where the kit is kept.<br \/>\n\u2022 Work: Be prepared to shelter at work for at least 24 hours.
