(PHOTOS BY JESSE LEON GUERRERO)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\">SAN, Guam\u2014Joint Region Marianas celebrated Chamorro and Women\u2019s History Month at the command headquarters in Asan on March 27.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nThe JRM Diversity and Inclusion Committee hosted the event to highlight the culture of Guam\u2019s native Chamorro people and to honor the positive influence and accomplishments of women in society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe celebrate each other\u2019s differences because that\u2019s what makes us strong,\u201d said Rear Adm. Tilghman Payne, commander of JRM. \u201cA diverse group brings different approaches and solutions to the problems and challenges that we all face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Keynote speaker Superior Court of Guam Judge Anita Sukola shared her experiences as a local woman and praised the structure of Chamorro society and its cultural values, such as caring for the elderly or sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not out of obligation that we take care of our parents, but because of respect,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen we respect, it equates love. That\u2019s the product of our Chamorro system. We take care of each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Attendees participated in a Jeopardy-style quiz game that focused on women pioneers such as Chief Judge Frances Tydingco-Gatewood, who is Guam\u2019s first woman to serve as a U.S. District Court judge, and Marie Curie, who is the first woman to win a Nobel Prize.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s such an awesome time for women in the Navy,\u201d said Cmdr. Tara McArthur-Milton, JRM total force manpower director. \u201cIt\u2019s very important to note that women have really made a significant contribution in so many different venues, whether it\u2019s education, health care, government or the military.
