{"id":311357,"date":"2019-11-05T06:06:27","date_gmt":"2019-11-04T20:06:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=311357"},"modified":"2019-11-05T06:06:27","modified_gmt":"2019-11-04T20:06:27","slug":"young-poets-in-our-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/young-poets-in-our-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Young poets in our society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The creative writing class of Leila Staffler for school year 2018-2019 and the creative writing class of Nicole Sablan for school year 2017-2018 collaborate in this literary showcase. <\/p>\n<p>My Rainbow Room<\/p>\n<p>By NOE&#8217;LANI ROMOLOR<br \/>\nKagman High School<\/p>\n<p>Mama always told me not to come out<br \/>\n\u201cStay inside and color your rainbow like everyone else\u201d<br \/>\nMama made sure that only daddy could see<br \/>\n\u201cWe have a reputation to protect\u201d<br \/>\nI don\u2019t know what that means <\/p>\n<p>My closet is packed with such plentiful style<br \/>\nMy colorful jeans and shirts in a neat colored pile<br \/>\nMy dad thinks it\u2019s a \u201ccompany disgrace\u201d<br \/>\nThe boy next door says it suits my \u201cpretty face\u201d <\/p>\n<p>I end up grounded when I step out to breathe<br \/>\nBut it\u2019s more suffocating out here than it usually seems<br \/>\nI feel more unhappy when I look at my rainbow<br \/>\nThere is no more light, only secrets and sorrow  <\/p>\n<p>My anger is present when I slam my door<br \/>\nI shout colorful words \u2018til my voice becomes sore<br \/>\nI see all my things broken and shattered<br \/>\nBrings me back to the time my sexuality didn\u2019t matter <\/p>\n<p>Only it did; my whole life they tried to define me as straight<br \/>\nBringing co-workers with daughters they thought I could date!<br \/>\nBut I felt disgusted and angry with myself already<br \/>\nThey only shoved me farther in the closet when they knew I wasn\u2019t steady<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not my fault I sneak him in at night<br \/>\nWhere he would make me smile, my parents put up a fight<br \/>\nIt\u2019s not my fault I open up so slow<br \/>\nWhere he tells me to embrace it, my parents make me put up a show<br \/>\nHe helped me reveal myself without doing me harm<br \/>\nHe helped me realize I shouldn\u2019t have to be alarmed <\/p>\n<p>It still hurts when I know they still don\u2019t accept me<br \/>\nI\u2019m still the same person, I just love people differently<br \/>\nAnd I know it\u2019s okay now, I just didn\u2019t realize it so soon<br \/>\nI\u2019m not the only one who came out of a messy rainbow room<\/p>\n<p>Mentor: Ms. Leila Staffler<\/p>\n<p>***<br \/>\nNATURE<\/p>\n<p>By M.A.<br \/>\nTanapag Middle School<\/p>\n<p>THE WOMB OF MANKIND LIES HERE,<br \/>\nIT SYMBOLIZES THE START OF LIFE.<br \/>\nBUT NOW, IT HAS ADVANCED,<br \/>\nFROM BUILDING HIGH, SCALY DINOSAURS,<br \/>\nTO THE WITTY, PUNY MAMMALS<br \/>\nAND SO FORTH. <\/p>\n<p>WE STRIVE IN IT, UNPROTECTED,<br \/>\nYET CONQUERING WITH OUR WITS.<br \/>\nBUT IT IS ALWAYS ARMED,<br \/>\nFROM THE VERY START,<br \/>\nIT PARALYZES US WITH LIGHTNING,<br \/>\nIT BOMBARDS WITH VOLCANOES,<br \/>\nIT SHAKES THE MIGHTY EARTH,<br \/>\nAND BRINGS US WHISTLING WITH TOMATOES.<br \/>\nYET IT HAS ANOTHER FACE.<br \/>\nA TOTALLY NEUTRAL OTHER SIDE.<br \/>\nTHAT OF PEACE, AND THAT OF SUNSHINE.<br \/>\nGOLDEN RAYS PROVIDE THE HEAVENLY LIGHT,<br \/>\nWIND AND WATER COINCIDE.<br \/>\nBIRDS CHIRP AND TWEET WITH THEIR NEWBORNS,<br \/>\nMAMMALS CARING FOR THEIR OFFSPRING,<br \/>\nFISH HEADING UPSTREAM TO HATCH.<br \/>\nISN\u2019T IT WONDERFUL?!<br \/>\nTHAT\u2019S LIFE!<br \/>\nWE HUMANS MUST DECIDE,<br \/>\nTRASH, POLLUTION, NATURE\u2019S WRATH,<br \/>\nOR BETTER, THE CARESSING HAND OF NATURE. <\/p>\n<p>Mentor: Ms. Nicole Sablan<\/p>\n<p>***<br \/>\nEMOTION<\/p>\n<p>By M.A.<br \/>\nTanapag Middle School<\/p>\n<p>ONE WORD. THAT\u2019S IT.<br \/>\nBUT HOW MUCH IT MEANS.<br \/>\nIT\u2019S ANGER, SADNESS, HAPPINESS ALL IN ONE. <\/p>\n<p>BUT THERE IS MORE.<br \/>\nYOU CAN FIND FRETTING FRUSTRATION,<br \/>\nSTANDING IN IN A CORNER,<\/p>\n<p>YOU CAN FIND LUCKLESS LONELINESS,<br \/>\nTOTALLY ISOLATED ON AN ISLAND,<br \/>\nYOU CAN FIND ECSTATIC EAGERNESS,<\/p>\n<p>EXPLORING EVERY CORNER EXISTING,<br \/>\nYOU CAN FIND SUICIDAL SADNESS,<br \/>\nLOOKING BLANKLY INTO A PRECIPICE,<\/p>\n<p>AND YOU CAN FIND PULVERIZED PAIN,<br \/>\nCROUCHING LOW TO THE GROUND.<br \/>\nYET THERE\u2019S MORE. <\/p>\n<p>PANIC, LAZINESS, ADRENALINE,<br \/>\nAND STILL YET MORE,<br \/>\nEACH AND EVERY ONE AFFECTS YOU<\/p>\n<p>IN SOME WAY,<br \/>\nSO NAVIGATE CAREFULLY,<br \/>\nTO NOT GET LOST.<\/p>\n<p>AND JUST BELIEVE,<br \/>\nIT\u2019S JUST ONE WORD.<br \/>\nEMOTION. <\/p>\n<p>Mentor: Ms. Nicole Sablan<\/p>\n<p>***<br \/>\nMy worn-out clock<\/p>\n<p>By KEGHANI CHAPARIAN<br \/>\nMarianas High School<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve got less than a month to pull myself together<br \/>\nYet, your name puts me in an unceasing trance<br \/>\nI can no longer move, speak or think<br \/>\nMy mind is bombarded with soft gray fog<br \/>\nThe time is coming to an end<br \/>\nBut in a world where my hope is scarce<br \/>\nMy courageous heart will find a way<br \/>\nA way to weave the last of my nerves into a net<br \/>\nA metro catches the pieces of myself which I\u2019ve lost.<br \/>\nStill, my worn-out clock ticks<br \/>\nI still have time<br \/>\nIt is not much<br \/>\nBut it is time.<\/p>\n<p>Mentor: Leila Staffler<\/p>\n<p>***<br \/>\nFun<\/p>\n<p>By KOEY PAN<br \/>\nHopwood Middle School<\/p>\n<p>Fun. Let me describe fun first:<br \/>\nF is for friends who do stuff together<br \/>\nU is for you and me<br \/>\nN is for anywhere and anytime at all<br \/>\n(Down here in the deep blue sea)<br \/>\nOk.
