{"id":311651,"date":"2019-11-08T06:00:06","date_gmt":"2019-11-07T20:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=311651"},"modified":"2019-11-08T06:00:06","modified_gmt":"2019-11-07T20:00:06","slug":"essay-contest-asks-is-greta-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/essay-contest-asks-is-greta-right\/","title":{"rendered":"Essay contest asks: Is Greta right?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Are you a high school student who loves to write?<\/p>\n<p>The Saipan College Prep Academy is holding its \u201c1st Annual SCPA Essay Contest\u201d for high school students on the island. <\/p>\n<p>The contest is a double competition, with one open only to SCPA students, and the other being open to all high school students in the CNMI. <\/p>\n<p>Students need to write a 650-word essay on the topic, \u201cIs Greta Thunberg right?\u201d and submit it to Keith Tessen or Wanja Choi at the SCPA on or before Dec. 15 for SCPA students, and Dec. 30 for the rest.<\/p>\n<p>Thunberg is a 16-year-old climate change activist. In the essay, the students need to write whether or not they agree with Thunberg, and justify their position.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy students are teenagers and I wanted to inspire them,\u201d Tessen said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreta Thunberg is a teenager, and this girl is out there changing the world. I am hoping that [the students] will begin to understand that even though [they are] very young, [they] can do something to change things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tessen, who runs SPCA, said that hosting the essay competition is a good way to emphasize the academy\u2019s main focus, which is improving the reading and writing skills of students.<\/p>\n<p>Winners in both contests will each take home $500, second placers $250, and third placers $125. <\/p>\n<p>For more information, contact SCPA at 285-1669 or email Tessen at keithallentessen@gmail.com.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you a high school student who loves to write?
