{"id":311923,"date":"2019-11-12T06:06:28","date_gmt":"2019-11-11T20:06:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=311923"},"modified":"2019-11-12T06:06:28","modified_gmt":"2019-11-11T20:06:28","slug":"muna-serves-final-day-as-education-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/muna-serves-final-day-as-education-chief\/","title":{"rendered":"Mu\u00f1a serves final day as education chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today is the last day of Glenn Mu\u00f1a as the CNMI\u2019s education commissioner.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with CNMI State Board of Education chair Janice Tenorio yesterday, she thanked Mu\u00f1a on behalf of the board for his service as education commissioner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommissioner Mu\u00f1a has been a member of PSS for over 20 years\u2026and he has been an important asset to PSS and the BOE would like to thank him for his service and wish him the best in his future endeavors,\u201d Tenorio told Saipan Tribune.<\/p>\n<p>Tenorio said the BOE has not selected anyone yet for the position since the job vacancy announcement has just closed, and PSS Human Resource Department is still processing the applications it received. It was not immediately known how many individuals applied for the position but Tenorio said the discussion for the next education commissioner has been ongoing since Mu\u00f1a resigned last Sept. 12.<\/p>\n<p>She said the usual procedure for appointing a deputy commissioner is to choose between associate commissioner for instructional services Jackie Quitugua or interim associate commissioner for administrative services Charley Kenty. Both have served as acting education commissioner in the past during Mu\u00f1a\u2019s absence.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_311946\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-311946\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Glen-Muna-mug.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-311946\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Glen-Muna-mug-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-311946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Glenn Mu\u00f1a<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When Mu\u00f1a turned in his letter of resignation last Sept. 12, he told the BOE that it will be effective after 60 days, which is today, Nov. 12, 2019. Mu\u00f1a cited personal reasons for his resignation and thanked the board for trusting him.<\/p>\n<p>Mu\u00f1a was the system\u2019s associate commissioner for administrative services under former education commissioner Cynthia Deleon Guerrero and took over the top post after Deleon Guerrero was released in 2017. After Deleon Guerrero\u2019s tenure in 2017, the BOE first appointed Yvonne Pangelinan, the PSS associate commissioner for Student and Support Services, as PSS commissioner, before ultimately appointing Mu\u00f1a as interim commissioner in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>At 41, Mu\u00f1a is the youngest education commissioner. He served as the former principal of Oleai Elementary School, and was appointed as associate commissioner for administrative services in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Mu\u00f1a\u2019s resignation came just days after then-PSS Finance and Budget director Christopher Ching also left PSS.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today is the last day of Glenn Mu\u00f1a as the CNMI\u2019s education commissioner.
