Bordallo (D-GU) announced yesterday that the University of Guam is a recipient of the 2013 Saltonstall-Kennedy Program Awards. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association has announced over $10 million in recommended funding for 40 projects under the program. Of the $10 million, the University of Guam will receive $119,112 for bomb radiocarbon dating in support of Territorial Science and Bio-sampling of fisheries in Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.<\/span><br \/>\nThe S-K Grant Program is a competitive program administered by the National Marine Fisheries Service of NOAA, Department of Commerce. The program provides financial assistance for research and development projects to benefit the U.S. fishing industry. Available funds will support projects in aquaculture, conservation engineering, ecosystem studies, fisheries socioeconomics and identifying ways to help fishermen better achieve their annual quotas of fish so they can be more profitable in coastal regions throughout the United States and the Territories.\u00a0The University of Guam\u2019s grant application was reviewed based on technical merit and for usefulness to stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am pleased that the University of Guam has been chosen to be a part of the Saltonstall-Kennedy Program and will be receiving nearly $120,000 in grant funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association,\u201d said Bordallo. \u201cThis grant will continue to help Guam focus on the Territorial Science program throughout the territories.
