The Department of Finance is in talks with the Northern Marianas College about previous obligations that amount to around $2 million, according to interim NMC president Frankie Eliptico and Finance Secretary David Atalig.<\/p>\n
Atalig noted that his office is in communication with Eliptico\u2019s office on making good on this financial obligation that originated from fiscal year 2019.<\/p>\n
Atalig confirmed that his department owes the community college about $2 million from the previous fiscal year. \u201cThat is true and are part of the total obligations I still owe,\u201d he said in a message. \u201cI am in communications with the NMC president [Eliptico] to make amends on that.\u201d <\/p>\n
Atalig indicated that both offices are close to a resolution.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2026will continue to make transfers weekly to help their [NMC\u2019s] financial position,\u201d he said. Atalig did not respond when asked about other obligations his department owes.<\/p>\n
Eliptico told Saipan Tribune that communication between the college and the department are going smoothly, that efforts are being made to trim the total owed the college.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve had positive conversations with [Atalig] who has assured us that the CNMI Department of Finance will be able to transmit approximately $1 million within the next few days,\u201d he told Saipan Tribune. \u201cThis amount will reduce significantly the total pending for [fiscal year] 2019, but it won\u2019t cover it all,\u201d he said, without elaborating<\/p>\n
