Through the wish-granting power of the Make-a-Wish Foundation, you can help grant wishes of children who have critical illnesses.

“Make-a-Wish allows children to have one wish,” board member Kanae Quinn said, “whether it is to meet somebody, to go somewhere, to have something that they have always wanted and never had an opportunity, and to just forget about their medical condition for a little moment and have a wish come true.”

Make-a-Wish tries to help families who struggle with medical costs, through donations received from private entities. The children, who are referred to as Wish Kids, have critical illnesses, and have to face difficulties in their physical conditions.

“A lot of the wishes are for travel to the states for Disneyland, a concert, or something fun,” Quinn said. There are also those who wish for a gaming package or maybe electronics products.

Doing that doesn’t come cheap for the foundation, hence its need for donors. “The wishes do cost quite a bit of money because of the airfare and all that [comes with it],” Quinn said. “The average wish [costs] over $7,500.”

“Christmas is a great time for caring, sharing, and loving each other,” she said. “We just had a most recent wish granted. We had an interview for a young girl and her wish was to go to Magic Kingdom at Disney World. So she will be going there next year.”

Make-a-Wish also makes sure to remain caring to Wish Kids even after having their wishes granted. Wish Kids are invited to the foundation for them to know that they are still being cared for.

“They are not just given a wish and then forgotten about. We invite them to different events because we want to know how they are doing, make sure they are doing okay. And we just support them. We support the families,” Quinn added.

All the monetary donations that Make-a-Wish gets for Guam and CNMI (one region) remain local, and does not go to the U.S. mainland or anywhere else.

To make a wish come true, donate online on http://guam.wish.org, write a check to “Make a Wish Foundation”, or call (670) 483-WISH.

This Christmas, help make a child’s wish come true.
