(KIMBERLY BAUTISTA)

Ben Babauta, who is a member of Mount Carmel School’s Class of 1985, was recognized last Saturday night as the school’s 2020 Alumni of the Year during the MCS Alumni Association’s Night with the Knights at Pacific Islands Club.

Babauta, who was in complete shock upon being named the night’s awardee, said that he really did not expect it.

“It’s an honor. The award is quite exciting and I’m humbled. I’m definitely thankful to the Lord, my family for all the support, and to everyone else from MCS who supports me,” he said.

Babauta currently serves as MCS board chair and it was in that capacity that, he oversaw the merger of MCS and the Sister Remedios Early Childhood Development Center, implemented MCS’ first strategic master plan, and ensured competitive salaries for MCS teachers.

Babauta is currently the Duty Free Saipan T Galleria assistant general manager for store operations.

Outside DFS, Babauta owns Saipan’s lone bingo operation, and also serves in various non-profits, including the Northern Marianas College Foundation, the Saipan Rotary Club, and the Saipan Chamber of Commerce.

MCS president Galvin Deleon Guerrero said Babauta is deserving of the prestigious award because he has done much for the community as well as his alma mater.

“He’s a very humble man. He’s very deserving of this award and he’s very successful in his own right but he gives so much to the community and so much to his alma mater and it only makes sense to recognize him for all he has given to us, so this is a small token of recognition for a great man,” said Deleon Guerrero.

According to MCS spokesperson Victoria Deleon Guerrero, the MCS Alumni Association has been hosting the “Night with the Knights” for the past four years to bring all MCS alumni together for a night and to honor one outstanding alumni who has done great things for the community.
