(IVA MAURIN)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation moved last Jan. 31 to confirm the nomination of Kaelani Marie B. Demapan as member of the Saipan Higher Education Financial Assistance board.<\/p>\n<p>Demapan will serve the remaining two-year term of Ursula Lifoifoi-Aldan, who passed away in September last year.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking before the SNILD Standing Committee on Judiciary &amp; Governmental Operations, Saipan Mayor David M. Apatang appealed for the confirmation of Demapan, an early intervention counselor at the Northern Marianas College. It was Apatang who nominated Demapan to the SHEFA board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMiss Demapan has an accomplished academic track that I sincerely believe has prepared her to offer and bring to the table new ideas about how SHEFA can continue to assist our college students and trade school students realize their ambition, pursuing their higher education and skills training,\u201d Apatang said.<\/p>\n<p>Apatang added that bringing Demapan\u2019s experience as a college student to the SHEFA board would make current and future college students\u2019 higher education journey less stressful and more productive as she knows what it takes to survive through college because she had lived that life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a time when our island\u2019s financial resources are limited, and the easiest option to control expenditures is to make cuts\u2014cuts that potentially could affect students who are barely making ends meet\u2014I am certain that Miss Demapan\u2019s experience will help make those potential hurts or effect less of a burden on our students,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Backed by a throng of supporters, Demapan said that serving on the board would be her way of giving back to the same community that supported her entire educational journey, and added that she will serve three things: \u201can eye, an ear, and a lending hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Demapan, herself a recipient of SHEFA and CNMI Scholarship funds, graduated cum laude with a bachelor\u2019s degree in psychology from Chaminade University in Honolulu and earned a master\u2019s degree in Higher Education from the University of Michigan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation moved last Jan. 31 to confirm the nomination&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":32,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[689],"class_list":["post-316835","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-local-news","tag-shefa"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/316835","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/32"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=316835"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/316835\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=316835"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=316835"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=316835"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
