{"id":323611,"date":"2020-05-26T06:03:55","date_gmt":"2020-05-25T20:03:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=323611"},"modified":"2020-05-26T06:03:55","modified_gmt":"2020-05-25T20:03:55","slug":"lawmaker-promotes-self-sufficiency-via-agriculture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/lawmaker-promotes-self-sufficiency-via-agriculture\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawmaker promotes self- sufficiency via agriculture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In food security matters, House vice speaker Lorenzo Deleon Guerrero (R-Saipan) believes that agriculture could help save the Commonwealth.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in an interview yesterday, Deleon Guerrero said that people need to start looking into agriculture, as it could supplement the CNMI\u2019s major industry, tourism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could be an\u2026alternative industry for the Commonwealth,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have fertile lands. \u2026If we can produce our own vegetables, we can eliminate importing those products from across the world, and that way, we can be more self-sufficient.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Gov. Ralph DLG Torres stressed last week the importance of agriculture to the CNMI\u2019s economy and livelihood, and announced that he welcomes more agriculture on the island.<\/p>\n<p>The House of Representatives passed last March Deleon Guerrero\u2019s House Bill 21-108 that would rebuild and strengthen the agriculture sector in the CNMI, through the Kagman Commercial Farm Plot program. There are currently over 30 farm plots in Kagman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to look into the farm plots that can be made available for commercial farming.
