(University Of Guam)<br \/><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of Guam Press won its second Independent Publisher Book Award for CHamoru Legends: A Gathering of Stories written by Teresita Lourdes Perez and translated into CHamoru by Maria Ana Tenorio Rivera.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The book\u00a0received a bronze medal\u00a0in the category of Best Regional Fiction in the Australia\/New Zealand\/Pacific Rim region.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Independent Publisher Book Awards\u00a0is the longest running unaffiliated book contest for independent presses. Since 1996, it has become known as the \u201cworld\u2019s largest book awards contest\u201d and has \u201cidentified a reading list of progressive, thought-provoking books,\u201d according to the program. Authors and publishers worldwide enter to compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals in 85 general categories, 12 regional categories, and 11 e-book categories.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_323945\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-323945\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/CHamoru-pix2-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-323945\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-323945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The English cover of CHamoru Legends. (University Of Guam)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Released in November, CHamoru Legends: A Gathering of Stories is a collection of re-imagined classic CHamoru legends featuring artwork from 12 local artists. It is a double-sided hardcover book featuring the legends in English on one side and the same legends in CHamoru on the other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe beautiful thing about this [book] is it was designed to incorporate lots of different perspectives\u2014the perspective of art, the perspective of multiple languages. \u2026It is a testament to the multiple ways that a story can be told,\u201d said Perez, who also included personal reflections in the book connecting the legends to her life and family stories. \u201cI was not left alone in this process\u2014I didn\u2019t want to be left alone in the process of selecting the legends and in the process of drafting the legends because legends are a community voice.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The award is the second that UOG Press has received from IPBA. Last year, the UOG Press publication Lina\u2019la\u2019: Portraits of Life at Litekyan won a bronze medal for Best Regional Non-Fiction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_323946\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-323946\" style=\"width: 205px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/CHamoru-pix3-205x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"205\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-323946\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-323946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The CHamoru cover of CHamoru Legends.
