That means a higher demand for faster internet speeds and more reliable networks.

Recognizing this need, Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP), along with 82 other members of the U.S. House of Representatives, urged congressional leaders to appropriate at least $86 million for broadband infrastructure in future stimulus bills.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of reliable internet to stay informed, connect with family and friends, and engage in distance learning, telework and tele-health,” Sablan said.

In the CNMI, employees are encouraged to work from home, and use online video conference apps for meetings; government offices have implemented online services and portals; schools have transitioned to e-learnings; health centers have started doing telemedicine; and restaurants and grocery stores have launched online services. All these activities have increased the islands’ need for better broadband connectivity.

Lawmakers are specifically asked for more funding for the expansion of the E-Rate educational connectivity program to help schools connect students who do not have internet at home, or even digital equipment.

In their letter to congressional leaders, the lawmakers pointed that the COVID-19 pandemic has made it increasingly clear that having access to high-speed broadband is a necessity, and that it is a must to invest in expanding affordable and reliable high-speed internet access in the next emergency relief package.

“We asked for support to provide broadband to low-income consumers. Like the rural electrification program in the last century, bringing broadband to all areas of our nation will help ensure the health and economic welfare of Americans everywhere,” Sablan added.

In a separate interview, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres expressed support for the action. “Anytime that we have movements like this and actions by [Congress] to provide better services, especially access to internet for all of our students, I support it,” Torres said.

MD: Kilili joins in call for $86 billion funding for broadband internet.

KW: Delegate Gregorio Kilili C.
