{"id":326268,"date":"2020-07-13T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-12T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=326268"},"modified":"2020-07-13T06:00:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-12T20:00:00","slug":"kang-park-named-top-filmmakers-at-intl-thespian-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/kang-park-named-top-filmmakers-at-intl-thespian-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Kang, Park named top filmmakers at Int\u2019l Thespian Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ryan Kang and James Park of Marianas High School were both recognized as the top filmmakers in this year\u2019s International Thespian Festival that was held virtually from June 22 to 26.<\/p>\n<p>According to Harold Easton, chapter director of Thespians of the Western Pacific Islands, the highlight of this year\u2019s International Thespian Festival for Team CNMI was the awarding of the top film recognition to MHS animation filmmakers Kang and Park. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis recognition marks the No. 1 film presenter in the festival and [is acknowledged] at the \u2018The International Excellence Awards Showcase\u2019 at the close of the festival. This is the second year members of the MHS filmmaking team have been recognized as the No. 1 in film,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Kang and Park topped 2,400 students from 46 states and eight countries who participated in the virtual event.<\/p>\n<p>Kang and Park said they started working on their animated film in October 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe brainstormed multiple ideas and decided on one to work with. Afterwards, we held weekly meetings outside of school to solely focus on the video,\u201d Kang said. <\/p>\n<p>Park said they spent most of their time modeling characters using vectors from different sources, and creating objects for an eye-popping experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn every regional competition, we took the judges\u2019 feedback into great consideration, and further developed and updated our video to make our message more compelling and our animation more interesting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Both Kang and Park said that the COVID-19 pandemic stopped their work for a while, but they regularly met online to prepare for the festival.<\/p>\n<p>Kang and Park\u2019s animated film, A White World, was the only entry featured on the main stage. The film was about e-cigarettes\/vape use among teens, and received high ratings during the festival. <\/p>\n<p>The CNMI team included participants from Marianas High School and Dandan Middle School. <\/p>\n<p><strong>AWARDS<\/p>\n<p>Technical Theatre and Film<br \/>\nJames Park and Ryan Kang<\/strong> &#8211; Film (Animation): Excellent with one overall Superior ballot, plus significant Superior ratings in various categories on the other two ballots.<br \/>\nVladimir Palma and Vivian Liu &#8211; Film (Documentary): Excellent with a Superior Evaluation in Cinematography, Audio and Editing<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jody Coloma <\/strong>&#8211; Theater Marketing: Excellent<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carlyne Ada and Katherine Magat<\/strong> &#8211; Short Film: Submission being reevaluated by the Education Theatre Association<\/p>\n<p>Performances<br \/>\n<strong>Bernice Shane Sabino <\/strong>&#8211; Solo Musical: All Superior rated ballots<\/p>\n<p><strong>Boni Gio Sagana <\/strong>&#8211; Solo Musical: Excellent and one overall Superior ballot<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jonathan Wolf and Anastacia Shamanaeva<\/strong> &#8211; Duet Acting: Excellent with a Superior evaluation in acting transitions and voice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Betty Matson <\/strong>&#8211; Solo Musical: Excellent<\/p>\n<p><strong>College Call Backs<\/strong><br \/>\nBonnie Gio Sagana of MHS \u2013 Drama Major, scholarship offer from Midland University in Nebraska.
