While some members of the Senate Fiscal Affairs Committee are still tinkering with the idea of legalizing marijuana in the CNMI for medicinal and recreational use similar to Colorado, Gov. Eloy S. Inos is not shutting the door on that idea, although that would still depend on the bill that would reach his desk.
\n\u201cI understand any effort on marijuana legislation out here is strictly for medicinal purposes, not for commercial or entertainment,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n
No marijuana bill has been introduced at the Legislature since he became governor.<\/p>\n
Under previous legislatures and administrations, former representative Stanley Torres introduced bills to legalize marijuana for medicinal and\/or recreational use, but those bills were either killed or gathered dust.<\/p>\n
Inos, when asked whether he would support a medical marijuana bill, said, \u201cWe\u2019ll have to see the actual legislation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Some members of the Guam Legislature are also pushing for marijuana legalization.<\/p>\n
The Senate Fiscal Affairs Committee is considering the idea of inserting marijuana legalization in a House health and revenue-generating bill that raises cigarette tax by $2 a pack. The committee plans to cut the proposed cigarette tax hike to an initial 50 cents a pack.<\/p>\n
