The Executive and Legislative branches joined the CNMI Judiciary in signing a proclamation on Friday, declaring Thursday, May 1, 2014, as \u201cLaw Day\u201d in the CNMI.
\nChief Justice Alexandro C. Castro, Gov. Eloy S. Inos, and House Speaker Joseph P. Deleon Guerrero signed the joint proclamation in a brief ceremony in the CNMI Supreme Court.<\/p>\n
Inos encouraged people of the CNMI to participate and support the Judiciary\u2019s programs and activities for Law Day, which has a theme \u201cAmerican Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters.\u201d<\/p>\n
Also present at the ceremony were Associate Justice Perry B. Inos, Presiding Judge Robert C. Naraja, CNMI Bar Association president Maya B. Kara, and Associate Judges Kenneth L. Govendo and David A. Wiseman.<\/p>\n
Associate Justice John A. Manglona and Associate Judges Joseph N. Camacho and Teresa K. Kim-Tenorio, and Senate president Ralph DLG. Torres signed the proclamation in advance as they could not attend the ceremony due to conflicting schedules.<\/p>\n
According to the proclamation, Law Day is an occasion of public acknowledgment of the nation\u2019s and the CNMI\u2019s heritage of justice, liberty, and equality under the law, and May 1 has been declared \u201cLaw Day\u201d by Congress.<\/p>\n
In his welcome remarks, Jim Stowell, public information officer for the CNMI Judiciary and executive director of the Northern Mariana Judiciary Historical Society, expressed appreciation to the many people who participated in a variety of programs held over the course of the last month leading up to Law Day.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese community outreach efforts began with the justices, judges, and law clerks going to the classrooms and speaking at assemblies about this year\u2019s Law Day theme and the role of the Judiciary in protecting that process,\u201d Stowell said.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, the Judiciary\u2019s 25th anniversary, CNMI courts will hold a special recognition session in the Supreme Court at 10am, in which winners of this year\u2019s Law Day poster and essay contest winners will be presented with awards.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
