{"id":334847,"date":"2020-12-10T06:05:33","date_gmt":"2020-12-09T20:05:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=334847"},"modified":"2020-12-10T06:05:33","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T20:05:33","slug":"scholarship-okd-for-5-students-who-obtain-masters-in-behavioral-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/scholarship-okd-for-5-students-who-obtain-masters-in-behavioral-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Scholarship OK\u2019d for 5 students who obtain masters in behavioral health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Senate passed on first and final reading a bill that will establish a Behavioral Health Professional Scholarship in the CNMI to address the shortage of behavioral health professionals among U.S. citizens or permanent residents in the Commonwealth.  <\/p>\n<p>Such professionals refer to psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists, counselors, social workers, and substance abuse professionals.<\/p>\n<p>All eight senators present at the session voted \u201cyes\u201d to pass Senate Bill No. 21-40 in the form of Senate Draft 1. The bill will go to the House.<\/p>\n<p>Vice president Sen. Jude U. Hofschneider (R-Tinian) introduced the legislation in September 2019. It was then referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, and Welfare for disposition.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the bill is to establish a behavioral health professional scholarship for five eligible students who aspire to obtain a master\u2019s degree in a behavioral health field. <\/p>\n<p>In exchange, the scholarship recipients must return to the CNMI and work at the Commonwealth Health Center, Community Guidance Center, Tinian Health Center, Rota Health Center, or the Public School System for a certain number of years.<\/p>\n<p>The amount allocated for each master\u2019s degree scholarship shall be $10,000 per annum per students enrolled in a graduate program at a college or university in the U.S. or its territories or at any Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education partner institution for a period of up to two years.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_334848\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-334848\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Paul-Manglona-copy-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-334848\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-334848\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Manglona<\/figcaption><\/figure>local<\/p>\n<p>Before the voting, Sen. Paul A. Manglona (D-Rota) said the CNMI should seek CNMI students who are in the United States who already have advance degrees in behavioral health field.
