{"id":335506,"date":"2020-12-22T06:05:36","date_gmt":"2020-12-21T20:05:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=335506"},"modified":"2020-12-22T06:05:36","modified_gmt":"2020-12-21T20:05:36","slug":"nmc-pss-accord-allows-hs-students-to-earn-college-credits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/nmc-pss-accord-allows-hs-students-to-earn-college-credits\/","title":{"rendered":"NMC, PSS accord allows HS students to earn college credits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Northern Marianas College and the CNMI Public School System have agreed to create a program that will allow public high school students to earn college credits at NMC while still attending high school.<\/p>\n<p>The program, called \u201cCollege Now,\u201d was approved by the Board of Education during their meeting last Dec. 16 and was signed at NMC\u2019s Board of Regents conference room on As Terlaje Hill last Dec. 18, with NMC interim president Frankie Eliptico and Education Commissioner Dr. Alfred Ada signing the agreement in the presence of their respective board members.<\/p>\n<p>According to NMC Enrollment director Manny Castro, PSS instructors at the high school level will be teaching subjects where students can receive both high school and college credits for\u2014if they choose to. As part of the agreement, the instructors who will be teaching these courses must first be vetted by NMC. The way it\u2019ll work is that PSS instructors who will be teaching subjects where high school students can receive both college and high school credits have to meet all faculty qualifications for NMC and have to be certified by NMC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor example, if you\u2019re within the high school language arts class, some students may opt just for the high school credit and others may want both the high school and college credits, but it\u2019s the same instructor teaching the course,\u201d said Castro.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_335507\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-335507\" style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/College-Now-pix.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-335507\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/College-Now-pix-1024x531.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"498\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-335507\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Northern Marianas College interim president Frankie Eliptico and the Education Commissioner Dr. Alfred B. (JUSTINE NAUTA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to Eliptico, \u201cCollege Now\u201d would give PSS high school students an opportunity for an accelerated pathway to their career. PSS students won\u2019t have to wait until they graduate from high school to attend and earn college credits and they can start doing that now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is really a big testament to the relationship that NMC has with PSS and this is just one of the initiatives.
