Vergara<br \/>\nSpecial to the Saipan Tribune<\/div>\n<p>The shaven head with the smiling face<br \/>\nconfident in the gloomy side of shadow,<br \/>\nsandaled feet, sun saffron-robed body,<br \/>\nwalks out with a begging bowl, empty.<br \/>\nWhatever is gathered each day<br \/>\nmakes for nourishment, his way.<\/p>\n<p>My head remains unshaven,<br \/>\nbut my soul wears saffron.<br \/>\nMy gait is not so steady,<br \/>\nbut my sandals are strong.<br \/>\nAnd I, too,\u00a0am out\u00a0begging,<br \/>\nto have my bowl filled full.<\/p>\n<p>What does my bowl gather?<br \/>\nDoes what comes along<br \/>\nadds to what I already know?<br \/>\nDoes the mendicant on his knee<br \/>\never does anything new?<br \/>\nMy bowl holds my knowing and doing,<br \/>\nwhich maintain and sustain my being.<\/p>\n<p>I gather memories, for sure.<br \/>\nThey come fully accompanied<br \/>\nby atmospheric bewildering,<br \/>\non loud and fine canvasses,<br \/>\nwild and angelic rendering,<br \/>\nof romantic misting rain,<br \/>\nof tears of joy and pain,<br \/>\nfrom smiling faces,<br \/>\nsmell of earthen places,<br \/>\nof sounds of laughter,<br \/>\nbrothers and sisters all.<\/p>\n<p>In Zhongguo&#8217;s earth, the taste of dust<br \/>\ndelivered in amazing and assuring hugs.<\/p>\n<p>When my day is done,<br \/>\nmy bowl is filled, my soul is full,<br \/>\na mortal flesh chimes on a goal.<\/p>\n<p>And what is in your bowl?<\/p>\n<p>In my mendicant wandering last year,<br \/>\nmy heart awe struck and shaken,<br \/>\nmy hopes and dreams forsaken,<br \/>\nmy body\u00a0gave way\u00a0to aging,<br \/>\nset\u00a0fleshly sashay to sagging;<br \/>\nwhile\u00a0folks endured their suffering,<br \/>\nvoices throve in melodious singing,<br \/>\nfamilies had fun, kin spirits ran.<\/p>\n<p>New friends in old familiar places,<br \/>\nold friends emerged in new embraces,<br \/>\npainful political systems in decay,<br \/>\nsave us from uncles, we pray,<br \/>\ndiverse people choosing to OCCUPY,<br \/>\nnew models of sociality to try,<br \/>\nclassmates disremembered re-connected,<br \/>\nvictims&#8217; lamentations and stories heard<br \/>\nflagrant fragrances of atrocities aired.<\/p>\n<p>Ah, I&#8217;ve got experiences to describe,<br \/>\nexpressed feelings, decibels for the night,<br \/>\narticulated thoughts complex and simple,<br \/>\nin awe and wonder of common encounters,<br \/>\nat once, devastating and full of life,<br \/>\nI am pretty nourished, humbled and gratified.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0heard of a manger 2000 years ago,<br \/>\ntruthfully\u00a0imagined,\u00a0inspired, or so,<br \/>\nnow we herald echoes of a distant flaring,<br \/>\nour\u00a0universe some 14 billion years old,<br \/>\ntruth sanctifies factual imagining,<br \/>\nreality embodied, plainly yet boldly told.<\/p>\n<p>Light, love, life comes through<br \/>\nin the discordant sound of the erku,<br \/>\naccompanies the gugong in trance,<br \/>\nlife&#8217;s energy incarnates in dance.<\/p>\n<p>Again,<br \/>\nempty 2012 bowl is out to gain<br \/>\nin another chosen time of turning,<br \/>\nthe\u00a0substance of life ever churning,<br \/>\nand the causes of our lives, we partake,<br \/>\nchances transformed, to undertake,<br \/>\nadd the daily\u00a0choices we will make,<br \/>\na year-full begging bowl to contemplate,<br \/>\nlife&#8217;s being, we willfully celebrate.<br \/>\nLet&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><em>Jaime R.
