{"id":337064,"date":"2021-01-21T06:05:45","date_gmt":"2021-01-20T20:05:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=337064"},"modified":"2021-01-21T06:05:45","modified_gmt":"2021-01-20T20:05:45","slug":"trump-admin-says-no-to-torres-request-for-match-waiver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/trump-admin-says-no-to-torres-request-for-match-waiver\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump admin says no to Torres\u2019 request for match waiver"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON, D.C.\u2014The Commonwealth government\u2019s request for a waiver on the local match required for COVID-19-related grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been denied.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter to Gov. Ralph DLG Torres dated Jan. 15, 2021, Robert Fenton, who is currently performing the duties of the FEMA administrator, said the governor\u2019s request \u201cis not warranted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on our review of all of the information available, it has been determined that the increased level of funding you have requested is not warranted. Therefore, I must inform you that your request for a cost share adjustment for this major disaster declaration is denied,\u201d wrote Fenton, who was previously the administrator for FEMA\u2019s Region IX and has been directly involved with the Commonwealth\u2019s recovery from the 2018 typhoons, as well as the coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>According to a press statement from the Office of Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP), Torres made his request in March of last year, but the Trump administration \u201cwaited until the last minute to refuse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If it chooses to do so, the Commonwealth does have 30 days in which to appeal the decision to the incoming Biden administration.
