Ralph DLG Torres at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cathedral in Susupe last Jan. 22. (Neil Fama)

Mount Carmel School kicked off its annual celebration of Catholic Schools Week with a proclamation signing at the Mount Carmel Cathedral in Susupe last Jan. 22, with the theme “Faith, Excellence, Service.”

MCS president Dr. Galvin Deleon Guerrero said the theme is fitting because “that’s what Catholic schools are all about: our faith in God, our pursuit of excellence, and our commitment to serving our community and serving our world.”

In a later interview, Deleon Guerrero cited two reasons why they still pushed through with the celebration. “As a Catholic school we have to remember that we’re part of a broader community. Catholic Schools Week is actually a national celebration in the United States that is led by the National Catholic Educational Association, and includes all Catholic schools in all the states and territories, and Mount Carmel has been celebrating this since the 1990s, and it’s just a great way to join in solidarity with other Catholic schools,” said Deleon Guerrero. “We’re celebrating Catholic Schools Week, this particular year, is that we’ve been through so many challenges—we’re going through this pandemic, we’ve been through economic turbulence and, not long before that, we’ve been through two major typhoons, and yet Catholic schools are still here.”

According to Deleon Guerrero, since Gov. Ralph DLG Torres has been governor, he has been the only governor to go to the cathedral and sign the proclamation.

“Most proclamations…were signed either at the Multi-Purpose Center or the [Office of the] Governor’s conference room, but when Gov. Torres became governor for the first time we asked him [to sign it on campus] and every year he’s graciously agreed to do that, and it means a lot because it means that we can have more students more faculty present for such an important occasion.”

MCS and the Sister Remedios Early Childhood Development Center have been hosting the celebration every year.

Usually, MCS would celebrate with in-person activities throughout this week. This year, MCS will still have activities but virtually.

Mount Carmel School kicked off its annual celebration of Catholic Schools Week with a proclamation…

[4
1679,1181
post-337212","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-local-news","tag-catholic-schools-week","tag-mcs
["GET
