(Jayson Camacho)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs\u2019 Office on Aging will be celebrating Older Americans Month\/Mes Man\u2019amko this month after a proclamation signing yesterday morning at the Man\u2019Amko Center in China Town.<br \/>\nThe proclamation aims to enrich the lives of senior citizens by emphasizing the need to take action to safeguard them from unintentional injuries where they live, work, and socialize.<\/p>\n<p>The proclamation also calls for the need to educate the elderly on how to avoid the leading causes of injury for older adults and helping them take control of their safety and wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Eloy S. Inos said he supports the proclamation because he regards himself as one of the older citizens of the CNMI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m more than qualified and its amazing that most of the folks here are 85 years old and this has a lot to do with their wellbeing; they got other peers to interact with,\u201d Inos said.<\/p>\n<p>There are about 4,766 citizens ages 60 and older in the CNMI.<\/p>\n<p>Inos said that everyone should be committed to helping individuals live longer and healthier lives.<\/p>\n<p>Saipan Senior Citizen Advisory Council president Maria Salinas said the man\u2019amko have made countless contributions and sacrifices to ensure a better life for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will continue to display our talents and share it [with] the younger generation,\u201d Salinas said.<\/p>\n<p>Inos urged every citizen to take time this month to recognize older adults and the people who serve and support them as powerful and vital citizens who greatly contribute to the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always good to spend some time [with the man\u2019amko] and I would like to be down here to spend some time with them and they have formed a cohesive group and they really care,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Aging Office director Walter Manglona said it has been over 50 years since the U.S. government designated the month of May to honor and acknowledge the many contributions of older Americans in our communities and families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is time to appreciate and celebrate their vitality and aspirations and the influence they have on each and every one of us,\u201d Manglona said.<\/p>\n<p>Saipan Mayor Donald Flores, who was also at the proclamation signing, said he is honored to be there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe man\u2019amko have been our mentors throughout our lives and we\u2019re happy that they are here and they are strong and it shows that the program is actually taking care of the man\u2019amko,\u201d Flores said.<\/p>\n<p>The occasion was witnessed by Aging Office staff, legislative officials, Department of Lands and Natural Resources Secretary Arnold Palacios, Aging Center congregates, and various departments under DCCA.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Community and Cultural Affairs\u2019 Office on Aging will be celebrating Older Americans&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":45,"featured_media":33839,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[26,21,67],"class_list":["post-33828","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-local-news","tag-cnmi","tag-life","tag-people"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/33828","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/45"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=33828"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/33828\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/33839"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=33828"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=33828"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=33828"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
