SANTA RITA, Guam<\/strong>\u2014U.S. Naval Base Guam and Apra Harbor\u00a0waterfront units will participate in a tsunami response exercise on March 30\u00a0from 8am to 12pm.<\/p>\n

The purpose of this exercise is to evaluate local tsunami response plans; increase tsunami preparedness; enhance training and readiness; validate\u00a0evacuation timing in the case of an actual tsunami event; and improve\u00a0coordination throughout the base.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunamis have reminded the world again of the\u00a0urgent need to be more prepared for such events,\u201d said Robert Ellsworth, NBG\u00a0Emergency Management director. \u201cThis important exercise will test the current\u00a0procedures for tsunami warnings and help identify operational strengths and\u00a0weaknesses on NBG.\u201d<\/p>\n

The exercise, titled Big Wave 21, will simulate a widespread tsunami warning\u00a0and advisory situation throughout the western Pacific and South China Sea, which requires implementation of local tsunami response plans.<\/p>\n

During the tsunami drill, waterfront units will evacuate to designated tsunami\u00a0assembly areas.<\/p>\n

The drills provide an opportunity for NBG emergency management to exercise its\u00a0operational lines of communication, review response procedures, and promote\u00a0preparedness. Regular exercising of response plans to high impact events is\u00a0critical to remain ready for an emergency.<\/p>\n

There are currently no planned road closures and the force protection\u00a0condition status will not change throughout the duration of the\u00a0exercise.<\/p>\n

As part of the exercise, the NBG Giant Voice and Automatic Telephone\u00a0Notification System will be activated, and residents in surrounding areas of\u00a0the GV speakers will hear exercise announcements throughout the day. (PR)<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
