{"id":342392,"date":"2021-04-19T06:05:36","date_gmt":"2021-04-18T20:05:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=342392"},"modified":"2021-04-19T06:05:36","modified_gmt":"2021-04-18T20:05:36","slug":"virtues-and-vices-naughty-and-nices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/virtues-and-vices-naughty-and-nices\/","title":{"rendered":"Virtues and Vices\/Naughty and Nices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A sonnet series inspired by Benjamin Franklin\u2019s The Thirteen Virtues in Poor Richard\u2019s Almanac.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Virtue of Order<\/strong><br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cLet all things have their places, let each part of your business have its time.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2014Benjamin Franklin (1706 -1790)\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nIn order to get things in order one needs thought<br \/>\nrectifying procedures puts systems in place<br \/>\npay close attention to the order that is sought<br \/>\nbe a short order organizer in almost every case<br \/>\norder ham and eggs sometimes instead of bacon<br \/>\ngive just straight facts to the newspaper reporter<br \/>\nlet people know it is your seat they are taking<br \/>\nmake haste moving away from the SBD farter*<br \/>\nbe honest and prompt filing your income taxes<br \/>\nput dishes back in the same place in the cupboard<br \/>\nserving meals on time will quickly move forward<br \/>\nplace a low priority on removing your ear waxes<br \/>\nlast but not least use alphabetical arrangement<br \/>\nthings may fall in order without estrangement.<\/p>\n<p>(*A quote also found in Benjamin\u00a0Franklin&#8217;s Poor Richard&#8217;s Almanac, 1736, &#8220;He that lives upon\u00a0Hope, dies Farting.&#8221; SBD means Silent But Deadly.)\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<strong>The Vice of Disorder<\/strong><br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nMore often than not my desk is in disorder<br \/>\nmy wife says clean it up or she\u2019ll throw it out<br \/>\nguess I need some mental magic kind of sorter<br \/>\nbut my mind is often in disorder no doubt<br \/>\nI\u2019m ordered to do \u2018dat\u2019 and ordered to do \u2018dis\u2019<br \/>\nwhile I\u2019m content with life\u2019s disorder as it is<br \/>\ntaking things as they come randomly and amiss<br \/>\nhappy with the chaos of pop pop fizz fizz<br \/>\nstrolling and lolling around amidst clutter<br \/>\nignoring all the trolls and disorder criticism<br \/>\nis easy for me like a hot knife through butter<br \/>\nbetween order and disorder remains a schism<br \/>\nin 45\u2019s 01\/06\/21 speech to the mob we heard him<br \/>\nrant on the \u2018Vote Steal\u2019 reductio ad absurdum*<br \/>\nrepeating \u201c argumentum ad ignorantium \u201d.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n(*reductio ad absurdum is Latin for \u201creduction to absurdity.\u201d In logic, it means a form of refutation showing contradictory or absurd consequences following upon premises as a matter of logical necessity.)<\/p>\n<p>***<br \/>\n<em>Joey aka Pepe Batbon is a retired educator who taught in the CNMI, NOLA, and LVNV.
