(MARK RABAGO)

After being closed for more than two years, AE Ice Cream Rolls is back at Sugar King Park just in time for Saipan’s notoriously hot summer.

One of the island’s favorite dessert shops has been closed since 2018 following the devastation of Super Typhoon Yutu and water issues at the location.

Owner Vincent Shane Camacho said AE Ice Cream Rolls launched in 2017 and is one of the first businesses that opened at Sugar King Park, the concession stands of which are handled by the Saipan Mayor’s Office.

“We closed after opening for eight months due to water issues that needed to be fixed and prior to that Yutu happened,” he told Saipan Tribune.

He said he named AE Ice Cream Roll after his daughters’ names—Aniyah Emma and Ayvree Elise. Not coincidentally, Camacho said both of them love ice cream.

So, after more than a two-year wait, Camacho said AE Ice Cream Roll is just happy to reopen again and serve the local dessert-loving community.

“We feel awesome. When we were closed we had a lot of our regular and new customers asking when we will reopen. We’re just happy to welcome our returning regular customers and new ones every time we open our store,” he said.

With the reopening comes a fresh and hip menu for AE Ice Cream Roll, which includes, among others, Mangonada.

“Our new item is called Mangonada. It’s a blended frozen beverage that combine sweet, tart, and savory authentic Mexican flavors in a unique drinking experience. Our Mangonada swirls combine the bright, tropical flavor of mango fruit with a salty and tart taste of chamoy and a spicy kick from the Tajin. Since we introduced it on our menu, it has been a hot-selling new item,” said Camacho.

Chamoy is a variety of savory sauces and condiments in Mexican cuisine made from pickled fruit, while Tajin is a brand of Mexican seasoning mix.

Even before their hiatus, AE Ice Cream Roll has been an island favorite among Saipan foodies and Camacho attributes this to the quality of their ice cream and the fact they don’t scrimp on toppings.

“What makes us different is that our ice cream is freshly made on a flat pan that is below -20 degrees. It’s freezing cold! It is made from liquid form to ice cream with added flavored ingredients then rolled into form, not scooped.”

AE Ice Cream Roll has over 20 flavors, but currently they’re only serving 10 of their top-selling flavors. These include Monkey See Monkey Do, which is fresh bananas and Nutella mixed with house-made cream base; Smores Please, which is Graham crackers and chocolate topped with campfire-type marshmallows on a stick; Choco Oreo, which is, of course, Oreo and chocolate mixed with house-made cream base; and Tutti Frutti, which is fruity pebbles cereal mixed with house-made cream base.

“Our mission is simple. We want everyone to try our ice cream. For us, it’s not just about serving ice cream, it’s about creating a revolution. If you’re looking for new and exciting flavors of ice cream, check us out for a delicious experience. You won’t regret it!” said Camacho.

AE Ice Cream Roll is open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 2:30pm to 6:30pm; Saturdays from 2pm to 6pm; and Sundays only on private payday weeks from 2pm to 6pm.
