{"id":344116,"date":"2021-05-13T06:00:47","date_gmt":"2021-05-12T20:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/?p=344116"},"modified":"2021-05-13T06:00:47","modified_gmt":"2021-05-12T20:00:47","slug":"epa-300k-in-brownfields-funding-awarded-to-opd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.saipantribune.com\/index.php\/epa-300k-in-brownfields-funding-awarded-to-opd\/","title":{"rendered":"EPA: $300K in Brownfields funding awarded to OPD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced yesterday that the CNMI\u2019s Office of Planning and Development will receive $300,000 in revitalization funding through its Brownfields Multipurpose, Assessment, and Cleanup Grants.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first time the Office of Planning and Development is a Brownfields grant recipient and makes the CNMI one of 151\u00a0communities nationwide that will receive\u00a0154 of these\u00a0grant awards totaling $66.5\u00a0million in all. <\/p>\n<p>Brownfields funding are typically used in assessing and cleaning up contaminated and abandoned industrial and commercial properties. OPD will use the funds for site assessments, cleanup planning and public engagement. Funded activities will focus on the Lower West Takpochao Planning Area in Garapan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nationally,\u00a0approximately 50% of selected recipients will be receiving EPA Brownfields Grant funding for the first time and more than 85% are located in or serving small communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough our Brownfields Program, EPA is delivering on the Biden administration\u2019s commitment to lifting up and protecting overburdened communities across America, especially communities that have experienced long periods of disinvestment and decay,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0EPA administrator Michael S.
