WASHINGTON. D.C.\u2014The U.S. Department of Transportation\u2019s\u00a0Federal Aviation Administration has awarded a $1.39-million grant to the Francisco C. Ada\/Saipan International Airport as part of more than $898.9 million Fiscal Year 2021 Airport Improvement Grants announced last Friday.<\/p>\n
The CNMI will receive $1,388,888 that will be used to fund infrastructure and safety projects. That makes the CNMI one of three U.S. territories awarded this funding; the others are the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in Puerto Rico and Fitiuta in American Samoa.<\/p>\n
The $898.9 million in total award includes $113.5 million in\u00a0American Rescue Plan Act\u00a0funding to award all grants at a 100% federal share.<\/p>\n
\u201cInvesting in our nation\u2019s infrastructure is how our country helped spark an aviation industry that now supports millions of jobs,\u201d said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. \u201cThese Airport Improvement Program grants will help modernize America\u2019s airports and ensure that our air transportation system remains the safest and most efficient in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
Grant projects funded through the Airport Improvement Program promote safety, efficiency, environmental stewardship, infrastructure, and security at the nation\u2019s airports. Today\u2019s announcement includes 488 grants to 447 airports in 49 states and American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Puerto Rico. Today also marks the 75th anniversary of the legislation that established federal investment in our nation\u2019s airport infrastructure.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese grants represent the legacy and vital role of airport infrastructure grant programs in helping the air transportation system operate safely,\u201d said FAA administrator Steve Dickson. \u201cInvesting in our nation\u2019s infrastructure through AIP grants is a cornerstone of our commitment to safety.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Airport Improvement Program receives approximately $3.2 billion in congressional funding each year. The FAA will award more than 1,500 grants this year.
