Franklin\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My friend Richard Murphy knew some great aphorisms<br \/>\none he often used to use was, \u201cthe steady man gets it.\u201d<br \/>\nOzark farmers used to quote from a hillbilly catechism<br \/>\n&#8220;got dried up food, there\u2019s plenty water get it and wet it&#8221;<br \/>\nfolk sayings and songs about work circle the earth:<br \/>\nby the sweat of his brow with blistered hands &amp; feet\u00a0<br \/>\naching muscles, some sang of joy some about mirth\u00a0<br \/>\ncountries, cities, villages, farms and homes were built<br \/>\ndigging sawing pounding shoveling for money\u2019s worth<br \/>\nand lots of real blood, sweat and tears was often spilt<br \/>\ncalloused palms disliked being called a working slob<br \/>\nproud fisher, farmer, carpenter or pick and shovel job<br \/>\nwhen it comes to work on the job or in the backyard<br \/>\nalways play your Ace card: Work Hard and Play Hard.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<strong>Lazybones, Sleepin in the Sun<\/strong><br \/>\n \u201cEver idle hours breed wandering thoughts\u201d\u00a0<br \/>\n\u2014from Lucan, Roman poet (39\u00a0A.D. to\u00a065 A.D.)<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cLazybones sleepin in the sun how you gonna get\u00a0<br \/>\nyour workdays done\u2026\u201d Hoagy Carmichael nailed\u00a0<br \/>\nthe sloth question a few blows with his hit song back<br \/>\nin the 1930\u2019s. The word sloth is not used as much these<br \/>\ndays as it was back in Benjamin Franklin\u2019s day. But the<br \/>\nProtestant &#8216;Work Ethic&#8217; has persevered through to the<br \/>\n21st\u00a0century. I\u2019ve always liked the wise old saying,<br \/>\n\u201cidle hands are the devil\u2019s playground\u201d which has<br \/>\nbeen traced back to Chaucer\u2019s Canterbury Tales<br \/>\nthere is nothing wrong with taking a break, a nap<br \/>\na siesta, or a day off when common sense prevails<br \/>\nand logic is your cornerstone a laptop is on your lap<br \/>\nyou lose arguments with your boss if all else fails\u00a0<br \/>\nyou\u2019re exhausted and time off is what your wishing<br \/>\nhang out a sign or send an email: Gone Fishing!<\/p>\n<p>***<br \/>\n<em>Joey aka \u201cPepe Batbon\u201d Connolly is a retired educator who taught in the CNMI, NOLA, and LVNV.
