Gov. Ralph DLG Torres granted administrative leave for all non-critical Executive Branch employees last Friday beginning at 12pm in observance of a new national holiday, Juneteenth National Independence Day. <\/p>\n
In his memorandum addressed to all department and activity heads last Friday, Torres said Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans and the end of slavery in the United States. He granted the administrative leave in commemoration of this significant day in the nation\u2019s history.<\/p>\n
\u201cMay this new national holiday allow for all of us to reflect on our country\u2019s past, the fight for freedom and equality, and our responsibility to continue to work toward a brighter future for all,\u201d Torres said.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, June 17), Pres. Joe Biden signed Senate Bill 475, also known as the \u201cJuneteenth Bill,\u201d designating June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day and a legal federal holiday.
