The Northern Marianas Technical Institute\u2019s summer program for 35 students from Tanapag Middle School is now underway, with the student spending the next four weeks gaining an understanding of the two courses they chose. By Week 5, they will be treated to multiple field trips and lead teach-back sessions with their peers.<\/p>\n
The students, who began the summer program last June 29, were placed into five groups of seven and chose courses in culinary arts; electronics; carpentry; welding & heating, venting; air conditioning; and auto mechanic work. <\/p>\n
Four weeks of the program will be dedicated to interactive classes in two courses of the students\u2019 choosing, with the students spending two weeks for each course. In the final week, NMTI will treat students to field trips, where they will be exposed to real-life applications of some of the things they learned. <\/p>\n
According to NMTI interim chief executive officer Jodina Attao and Student Service coordinator Meena Benavente, plans for field trips to the Triple J Motors Saipan Service and Parts Center, one of the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.\u2019s power plants, Kensington Hotel Saipan and\/or Aqua Resort Club Saipan, and the NMI Museum are in the works. <\/p>\n
Today, July 7, the students will be going on a field trip to Triple J Wholesale, where they will tour the facility and learn about its supply chain and more through the guidance of Triple J management, said Attao. <\/p>\n
Attao said she wanted an outreach program for the youth, as they are more likely to be receptive and open to learning about trades professions and considering pursuing a trade in the future. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe would like to expand and enhance their knowledge and [allow] them to apply all the skills that they will learn [through the summer program]. These kids are young, so they\u2019re very impressionable, and we\u2019re excited for them to really expand their horizons,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
