CNMI youth recently had a chance to enhance their team building and leadership skills through 4-H Marianas\u2019 Camp Maga\u2019lahi. A total of 77 campers ages 7-14 joined this year\u2019s camp on Saipan.<\/p>\n
Camp Maga\u2019lahi is conducted in partnership with the Northern Marianas College Cooperative, Research, Extension, and Education Services \u2013 Family, Community and Youth Development or FCYD program.<\/p>\n
The campers, with the help of their counselors, were able to learn about CNMI history, culture, how to swim and fish, and how to protect CNMI watersheds and coral reefs. The camp also helped them build their leadership, responsibility, and citizenship skills.<\/p>\n
Campers on Saipan got a chance to visit Ma\u00f1agaha, Paupau Beach, American Memorial Park\u2019s Museum, and the aquaculture facilities of\u00a0NMC\u00a0CREES.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s a good way for the kids to interact with each other, especially given the fact that we\u2019ve been in this pandemic for about a year and a half now,\u201d said Tenta Tenorio, a parent of one of the campers. \u201cIt gives them a chance to interact, be with other kids, their peers, and I think the great planning that the 4H camp planned for all the activities was really helpful in making the parents feel comfortable that it was safe for them to attend these activities.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are dedicated to engaging our youth in learning about our islands and the CNMI\u2019s rich history and culture,\u201d said Robbie Suzuki Jr., an extension agent for\u00a0NMC\u00a0CREES\u2019 FCYD program. \u201cWe look forward to bringing Camp Maga\u2019lahi to Rota for the first time.\u201d<\/p>\n
4-H Marianas is currently on Rota to host Camp Maga\u2019lahi. Afterwards, they will host another camp on Saipan.<\/p>\n
Camp Maga\u2019lahi was made possible with the help of the American Memorial Park Junior Ranger Program, Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality, Coastal Resources Management, Coral Reef Initiative, Going Coastal, PSS Food and Nutrition Service, Division of Fish & Wildlife, Indigenous Affairs Office, 500 Sails, Mariana Islands Nature Alliance, DPS Boating Safety, Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services, and the\u00a0NMC-CREES Aquaculture & Natural Resource program.<\/p>\n
